Desert National Wildlife Refuge

9/19/2009 Continued south towards Las Vegas, then west and south again to my waypoint for Desert NWR. It turned out the waypoint was on the huge NWR, but no access here. Oh well - I headed south, west then north again to circle the mountains in the NWR. Had the usual car “lunch”. The temperature was pushing 90 by midday on an otherwise clear, dry, beautiful day. Drove 4 miles on yet another dirt/gravel road to the headquarters. Surprisingly, there was a very nice area to hike around on meandering trails in woods with a stream and marsh area. A guy from the place pointed out a white bird that disappeared in the trees, but otherwise didn't spot much. Still, the hike was enjoyable if hot.
