Multi-State National Monuments

Dinosaur National Monument (Colorado, Utah)

6/1/1995 Out to Dinosaur National Monument [UT] for a tram shuttle ride out to the quarry. Fascinating place - a building constructed over a huge wall containing many hundreds of fossil dinosaur bones (all parts) that had been partially excavated.

Hovenweep National Monument (Colorado, Utah)

5/25/2007 Continued on the back roads to Hovenweep NM [UT]. A quick look in the visitor center, then took the 1 1/2 mile hike around the canyon containing many towers and other buildings perched right on the canyon ledge. Needed plenty of water in the warm, dry air.

Statue of Liberty National Monument (New Jersey, New York)

9/1968 A day in NYC – went up in the Empire State Building, took the ferry to the Statue of Liberty (National Monument [NY]).

8/23/2008 Headed over to Liberty State Park and parked at the old train terminal. Went through security and got on 8:30 ferry [to Ellis Island, part of Status of Liberty NM][NJ]. Gorgeous day – sunny, light breeze, ultimately in the low 80s. In the main reception hall, beautifully restored, picked up audio tours which led us around the various rooms and displays, all really well done. We got an excellent feel for what it might have been like to come into the country via Ellis. Kim then signed up in the family history center and spent some time on the computer looking for Irish ancestors. She did find one, but it was linked to the wrong database for the manifest, so she filed a report with the assistant. From there onto the ferry for Liberty Island [Statue of Liberty NM in NY]. Things got more crowded here. Got on the very long security line, spending nearly an hour. At the end, they had both metal detector and explosives-sniffing machine that blew air at you. Checked out some of the displays. Then all climbed the 150 steps up to the top of the pedestal. Spectacular views here in all directions. Back down and over to the food area and, after a bit of a wait had snack lunch out on a nice patio under Liberty (the back of the head, anyway).
